In recent years I have become more interested in making art about the world instead of art about art. Since most of my time is spent in mid-Michigan, it seems natural to me that my work would reflect this "world," this place.
Yet it can never simply illustrate or document a series of more or less interesting scenes or moments. The work must aim at a high level of poetic distillation and transcendence; it must be very much about here and now as well as about everywhere and forever.
But I suppose that after all is said and done, the art that moves me profoundly is art that expresses a strong sense of place. Could Goya's achievements be imagined without his particular Iberian mileu? Could Monet have bloomed late without his Giverny? Cezanne without the South of France?
