Call to order at 5:20pm. Chair Dennis Cavanaugh
presiding.
Merit Membership for Next Year.
Chair Dennis Cavanaugh
received the Merit membership form requesting intended modem support for the
coming year. Larry Porn moved and Scott Gifford supported that Merit support be
reduced to fifteen (15) modems for next year. Board members present approved the
motion. Notices will be sent to GFN membership informing about the reduction in
Merit modems and advising switch to the PRI numbers for login. Notification will
also appear in What's New on the GFN website.
Chair
Cavanaugh received correspondence from Andy Rosenzweig
of Merit on access problems in Montrose. The indicated root cause of the
problem was that GFN does not own lines in the SSE-Michigan
dial-in location
where the Montrose number is located. Prior to the number change, the priority lines at Montrose that had been available to GFN
were paid for by GDL (Genesee District Library) which dropped their support of
them in 2004. Merit failed to transition ownership of the former GDL lines to
GFN. When the Montrose phone service was changed, GFN lost its priority access
in Montrose, diminishing access for GFN members.
To resolve the access
problem in Montrose, Merit has permitted increase of the token count on the GFN
RADIUS server to eight (8) from four (4). Merit will increase capacity in the
SSE-Michigan dial-in location, adding three (3) lines for GFN. Longer term,
Merit plans to combine the SE-Michigan and SSE-Michigan lines.
It was suggested that a special offer of
three months free service, with no setup fee, be made to Montrose members who
terminated GFN membership because of access problems to entice rejoining
GFN.
Email Reminders.
In March and April, the automatic feature for
sending reminders to members with accounts about to expire did not work. It is
not known whether the procedure is now functional for the May reminders due for
distribution at 1am on the 15th.
Portmasters Automatic
Reset.
Seems that time cannot be found to implement.
WebMail.
Suggestion was made that the
program be configured to clear the Trash Folder on user log off
and other program folders be set to clear in 1 to 3 days. Also,
investigate possibility of setting WebMail to mark Spam
for easy removal.
A few members have encountered a corrupt home
directory, preventing use of WebMail.
Treasurer Replacement.
Harvey
Sherman has resigned from post of GFN treasurer. Replacement will be sought
through contacts at Mott Community College and UM Flint. Chair Dennis Cavanaughtreasurer.
Accounting firm Plante & Moran used GFN database output to
generate forms and reports required to be filed with state, federal and township
agencies.
Web Committee.
Who reports for the committee now that Chad
Cramer is gone? Larry Porn will confer with Chad about reports.
DSL at
Naples Free-Net.
Les LeMieux
reported that the Naples Free-Net provides its members with a connection to a
DSL provider. Naples gets no recompense from the DSL
provider. They provide a connection. Thats all.
With respect to the
Genesee Wireless Initiative, what consideration is given
to security aspects? Will have to check with Jerry Preston.
Other
Matters.
There was little enthusiasm for funding a
booth at Five-Star Computer shows.
Adjournment: 6:30pm.
Next
Regular Meeting:
Thursday, May 25, 2006, at 5:15pm at
the Flint Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Respectfully
Submitted,
Solomon T Johnson,
Secretary
