Phone Number updated 09/97
The Genesee Free-Net. is now offering PPP access for all of it's registered
users. But before you can use this access there are a few things you must
do. The following is our attempt to give you step by step instructions on
the procedures to make PPP work for you. Please understand that our office
staff is overwhelmed as is our helpdesk. Please print these instructions
and follow them carefully.
Software Needed:
Netscape / shareware (Browser)
Trumpet Winsock / shareware (Dialer)
CRT /shareware (Telnet Session)
Winzip/shareware (Unzip Utility)
The Genesee Free-Net does not distribute this software and only provides
instructions for downloading it from the Internet. These software packages
are "Shareware' and the Genesee Free-Net recommends that if you are
using the product that you register it with the author.
Many other pieces of software exist, but we have found these to be the easiest
to configure and use. Carefully follow these steps:
We will 1st download the software.
- Select help
- Select Dial-up PPP Access
- Select Win 3.1 and 3.11
- Select Software needed for an Internet Connection
- Select each one of the options separately to download the software
needed.
- Zmodem is the prefered download tool.
- Initialize receive from within your communications software
- After downloading hit Enter to go back to menu.
You now have all the software needed to use the PPP connection through
the Genesee Free-Net. Now lets set it up. Before continuing, you will need
to know something about Windows. If you are truly a novice user, find someone
that knows how to install Windows Programs These instructions will guide
you, but do assume you have some basic knowledge.
Everything below is done from within the File Manager.
Now we will add the extensions to the file names
- Go into the directory where the files downloaded.
- Highlight the file n16e405, if you have downloaded Communicator, n16e304,
if you have downloaded Navigator 3.04
- Select File/Rename
- Enter n16e304.exe or n16e405.exe
- Click ok
- Do the same for the other files and rename adding the .exe or .zip
as indicated below
twsk30e.exe
wcrt112.zip
winzip31.exe
We will now create the subdirectories for the programs
- Highlight c:\ in the left window top
- Select File/Create Directory
- Create a directory called Trumpet
Create a directory called Netscape
Create a directory called crt
Create a directory called Winzip
We will now move the files into the directories created above.
- Go into the directory where the files downloaded

directory created
- Drag the file twsk30e.exe and drop it into the Trumpet directory created
- Drag the file wcrt112.zip and drop into the crt directory created
- Drag the file winzip31.exe and drop into the Winzip directory created.
You have now placed all the files into the appropriate directories.
Next we will expand all the files from within the directories.
- In the Winzip directory doubleclick on the file winzip31.exe, this
will install the program Winzip, which will be your unzip utility
- In the crt directory double click on the file wcrt112.zip this should
load Winzip and expand the crt program.
- In the Netscape directory double click on the file n16e304.exe or n16e405.exe
to expand it.
- in the trumpet directory double click on the file twsk30e.exe to expand
it.
We will now install the remaining programs
- In the Netscape directory double click on the file setup.exe and follow
all the instructions.
- In the trumpet directory double click on the file install.exe and follow
all instructions
- In the crt directory and the wcrt112 subdirectory double click on the
file setup.exe and follow all instructions
Now re-boot your computer.
Next you will need to configure Trumpet.
- Select the Trumpet icon from the Trumpet Winsock group.
- Select "File / Setup" and put in the following options and
settings:
IP address: (place nothing here)
Netmask: (255.255.0.0) This is an optional
setting and not necessary.
Name Server: (158.80.0.231)
Domain suffix: (gfn.org)
Internal PPP should be checked.
SLIP PORT: This is the number of your com port or serial port that your
modem is connected to.
Hardware Handshake should be checked.
NO other settings need to be changed.
You are now ready to go. Pat yourself on the back and lets start exploring
the Internet.
Dialing
- Open Trumpet.
- Select "Dialer / Manual Login"
- Type "ATDT<Your Dial-in Number>" (Touch Tone Telephone) or ATDP<Your Dial-in Number>
(Pulse Telephone).
- You are ready to Login once a connection is established. If you get
a busy signal,
- Type "a/". This will cause Trumpet to re-dial"
The following is what you see once connected and what your response should
be:
HOST: ppp
LOGIN: your_user_id@gfn.org
PASSWORD: your_password
Next you will see some computer code across the bottom of the screen, such
things as brackets, smiley faces, etc. Once you see this, press the escape
key and then click on the down triangle in the upper right hand corner of
the trumpet window to minimize trumpet. Start Netscape and you are off and
running. CRT will allow you to Login on the Genesee Free-Net just as if
you were dialing in normally to the gopher.
Remember that these programs are Shareware. Please be a user with integrity
and register them.
Enjoy our service.
