MAC Step by Step SetupPhone Number updated 09/97 Software Needed:Netscape / freeware (Browser)
We will 1st download the software.
You now have all the software needed to use the PPP connection through the Genesee Free-Net. Now lets set it up. Double click on all of the software that you have downloaded in order. Start with Stuffit Expander, as that will make life easier. Then follow the install programs, when available, and install the software where you want it installed if the option is given to you. You should probably restart now. Next you will need to configure MacPPP or OpenTransport. OpenTransport can be configured by configuring the TCP/IP control panel first. There is a field called"Connect via:". Set this to "PPP". There is another field called "Configure". Set this to "Using PPP Server". Then enter the Name Servers "205.145.139.41 " and "158.80.0.231 " and the Search Domain "gfn.org". Close the TCP/IP control panel and select SAVE when it asks if you want to. Now select the PPP Control Panel. Fill in your GFN login (your_username@gfn.org) and password and phone number for GFN. Select "Options" and choose "Bring Up Terminal Window After Connection". When you dial up, you will have to type in "ppp" at the host prompt, enter your_username@gfn.org and your_password, and click continue. If you have some other dialup connection in the Control Panel already, select Configurations under the Edit menu and create a new configuration.
To setup MacPPP, first select the MacTCP Control Panel. Select PPP in the MacTCP Control Panel when it first opens. Then click on the "More.." button. Fill in the Gateway Address by clicking on the "Manually" button in the "Obtain Address" box and then typing the gateway address. Then CLick on the "Server" button in the "Obtain Address" box. Then fill in the "Domain Name Server Information" box (Primary DNS 205.145.139.41 Secondary DNS 158.80.0.231). Click "OK" and then close the Control Panel. Do not restart yet. Then open the "Config PPP" Control Panel. Select what port your modem is in and select "New" for new PPP server. Give it a name. Then select "Config". Select the port speed and flow control you need and fill in any information you need to. Then select "Connect Script . . .". Click the first "Wait" button and type "host:" in the box. Then type "ppp" in the box underneath it and click the "CR" box at the end of that line. Click "OK". Then select "Authentication . . .". Type in your_username@gfn.org and your_password for the GFN. Select "OK". Close the Control Panel. Restart your computer. When you need to dial the GFN, Open the "Config PPP" Control Panel. Select "Open". It should connect. Then you can launch all of the other software you downloaded.
