Genesee County Sheriff’s Office

Paramedic, Patrol Units

The Genesee County Sheriff’s paramedic program began as an effort to solve a problem that was noted by community leaders in the late 1960’s and 1970’s.  Ambulances were staffed by a driver and attendant that had minimal training and response times were long.  Some areas of the county had no regular ambulance service, causing ambulance services to be dispatched from other areas.  The first improvement in service was the creation of several new companies that utilized volunteers.  In 1978 the Sheriff began training 17 police deputies as emergency paramedics that could provide state of the art field medical care to the citizens of Genesee County.  Since 1980 the volume of calls for emergency medical service from the Sheriff’s Office based program has grown from about 1200 calls per year to over 15,000 per year in all venues of the county.  Genesee County Sheriff’s Paramedics are able to start I.V. lines, give medications, and send on line electrocardiography to the hospital.  This important improvement reduces the time that a cardiac patient has to wait before definitive hospital based treatment begins.  If you are in good health, have never been arrested, and are a highly motivated paramedic you should consider applying for a position with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office.
