Corrections deputies work in the jail, supervising inmates under the direction of a sergeant. The inmate population of the jail may be as high as 600. Those deputies receive special consideration for promotion if they are already licensed as paramedics, through the Michigan Department of Community Health, or certified as police officers through the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards. When a deputy who is a paramedic is accepted into the Paramedic Division, he/she is sent to the police academy for additional training. After police certification is achieved new paramedic deputies have to work with a senior deputy until they have shown their proficiency as a paramedic, and as a police deputy.

Patrol Paramedic Paramedic Deputies who work in the Paramedic Division have a very special job. Their primary mission is to protect the public health, while patrolling the highways of Genesee County. It’s a difficult job that requires taking responsibility and making hard decisions that are often life or death decisions. Successful paramedic deputies assess patients, start I.V. lines, give medications, and arrest criminals all in the same shift. It’s not for everybody, but for an energetic multi-tasking individual with a positive attitude it can be rewarding. Law Enforcement DivisionPatrol or Traffic Deputy Police deputies assigned to traffic or patrol duties respond to calls for police service, enforce traffic laws, and investigate accidents, while patrolling the secondary roads of the county. The Traffic Division is notable because it has traffic investigators that are highly respected by the law enforcement community for their traffic accident reconstruction skills. Management and Investigations Deputies can apply and test for sergeant, when positions become available. First level supervisors and investigators are sergeants.

Sergeant, Paramedic Assignment Sergeants assigned to the Paramedic Division are first line managers of police paramedics. They are themselves, both police officers and paramedics, experienced in both fields. Sergeant, Traffic or Patrol Sergeants assigned to traffic and patrol must be experienced police officers, and they supervise the daily activities of police deputies. They also patrol in a marked police unit and respond to deputies calling for guidance on difficult situations that require a supervisor on scene. They work under the direction of a lieutenant. Sergeant, Corrections Sergeants assigned to corrections supervise the activities of corrections deputies in the jail. They may have up to 50 deputies on a shift, and they are responsible for a wide variety of activities, under the direction of a lieutenant. Sergeant, Investigations Sergeants may be assigned to investigating criminal activity, as a detective, or as a member of a special unit such as the Sheriff’s Posse under cover drug unit.
