The Marine Patrol Division at the Sheriff Department operates year round employing a full time certified police sergeant and seven part-time seasonal officers. The dive team also falls under the responsibility of the Marine Sergeant and approximately twenty paid on call divers are employed. The division draws its power of arrest and funding under Public Act 303 of 1967.
Responsibilities of the Marine Patrol include;
1. Instruction of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Pleasure Boating Safety Course to approximately two thousand middle school children each year.
2. Seasonal patrol of major waterways in the county, including selective enforcement and conflict resolution in problem areas.
3. The dive team performs search and rescue operations as well as evidence recovery when called upon.
The Division utilizes Kawasaki and Sea-Doo personal watercraft for selective enforcement and search & rescue. The patrol vehicles are full size 4x4 Chevrolet Blazers, and the boats are all outboard 16' runabouts. The dive team uses a specially equipped full size GM van that is loaded with the latest technically advanced SCUBA gear on the market.
