A 33-year-old Burton man was charged Nov. 9 in Central District Court in five different sex crimes involving children to whom he's related.

In the five cases, which allegedly took place in Flint and Vienna townships in the summer of 2006, Kevin T. Odette, faces:

·  Five counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct;

·  Four counts of child sexually abusive activity;

·  Four counts of using a computer to produce child sexually abusive material; and

·  One count each of assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct and second-degree criminal sexual conduct.

"This guy was running a factory, and we walked in on him," said Sheriff Robert J. Pickell about Odette's alleged child pornography distribution.

First-degree criminal sexual conduct is punishable by up to life in prison, while child sexually abusive activity and the computer are punishable by up to 20 years.

The cases involved boys and girls, some elementary school aged and two of them teenagers.

Magistrate Dena Altheide set cash bonds of $100,000 on each of the charges, requiring that Odette would have to come up with more than $1.5 million to get out of jail.

The warrants against Odette were sought by investigators from the Genesee County Sheriff's Department. Sergeants Joe Parks and Tom Pyles are in charge of the cases.

During Odette's arraignment from the Genesee County Jail, he described himself as a grocery store employee who is married and has a step-daughter. Altheide said an attorney would be appointed to represent him.

She advised Odette that the cases could be consolidated into a single file, but in the meantime scheduled preliminary examinations on the cases before different Genesee County district court judges for Tuesday and Wednesday.
