Hello SJV Chess Families, Dear Parents, The following are important dates for the remainder of the Chess season. Please note the tournaments are individual rather than team events and are available to your children to play in if they would like but are not absolutely essential. Contact the coach if your child needs a ride. Pizza is to be provided. There may be a small fee but I am not sure of the amount yet.) Saturday April 12 Utica Schools Chess Tournament (Shelby Jr. High, Shelby Twp., March 28 entry deadline) Monday April 14 Chess Club Pizza Party (Last regular chess club meeting) Saturday April 19 Wardcliff Scholastic Chess Tournament (Chippewa Middle School, Okemos. Pre-registration required. Monday April 21 Beginners Only Chess club Monday April 28 Beginners Only Chess club I have flyers for all of the tournaments except the Wooden Pawn Tournament in Grand Blanc. I hope to have these flyers posted on the SJV Web Site soon. Also, there are more tournaments available if you are interested (Contact me or check the Michigan Chess Association web site for more offerings: http://www.michess.org/tools/calendar.php3). Beginners Only Chess Club SessionsWe will have two Beginners Only chess club meetings this year (April 21 and April 28). These will be for those who are not currently members of our club. I have noticed the first two years that we have had many children show up for only one club meeting in the hope of learning to play chess. The beginners often feel intimidated by the children who already know how to play and it is difficult for me to give them the proper attention they need. Web SitesPlease visit the SJV Chess Section of the school web site: http://www.sjvkids.com/ChessClub.htm. We have several handouts on the site as well as links to instructional web sites to help your children improve their chess skills. I will also try to have the schedule above posted on the school web site. For anyone who is interested, you can also visit another chess web site that I recently created for my own high school: http://kearsley.chess.angelfire.com/alumni.htm. On this site you can even play back a few of my own games. NotebooksThis year we gave each of the children notebooks to hold their chess handouts and notation sheets. Please encourage them to keep their papers in these notebooks and to bring them to chess club. Whenever your children complain that they are “bored” you can suggest they study their chess handouts. Chess LeagueNext year, I am hoping we will be part of an elementary chess league in the Genesee County and surrounding areas. I have been talking to several area coaches in the hope of setting up a league or some other organized schedule for playing each other. It looks like there will be 5 other teams for us to play. We have a lot of details to work yet. E-Mail AddressesIf you did not receive this newsletter via e-mail also then please make sure you send me your e-mail address to add to my list.
