Parish School Opened in 1948
St. John Vianney Catholic School opened its doors on September 23, 1948 to
505 students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. The school was built under
the direction of Monsignor Henry Mayotte, the pastor of St. John Vianney
Parish, and was staffed by seven Sisters of St. Joseph and three lay
teachers.
In September of 1951, 29 students were enrolled in St. John Vianney High
School. By the time the new building was completed in February of 1955,
219 students were enrolled in grades nine through twelve. St. John Vianney
School's enrollment peaked at 1,218 students in 1961-62.
With the opening of Powers Catholic High School, the 59 students in the
Class of 1970 were the last graduates of St. John Vianney High School. In
the early 1970's, some parish operated elementary schools were also closed
and regional elementary schools were established at St. John Vianney, St.
Agnes, and St. Michael's. These schools were operated by the Genesee
Catholic Board of Education. At St. John Vianney, the primary grade school
was named in honor of Monsignor Mayotte. The middle school was named after
Father Donovan, a local priest. Eventually, Mayotte Primary and Donovan
Middle were combined into one school again, Donovan-Mayotte Catholic
School, which returned to parish supervision in 1988.
On the 50th Anniversary of its founding, we are very proud to be a leader
in Catholic education in Genesee County. We provide academic excellence as
well as maintaining an atmosphere where students can grow and develop to
their fullest potential. Strong Catholic values are woven into all facets
of our program. We thrive on the involvement and commitment of our
families and strive to integrate the resources of our community.
We are very proud to be the St. John Vianney School Family!
